How to Choose a Pipe Tobacco (8/3/2012)

Choosing a pipe tobacco can be a very daunting task.  There are literally hundreds of brands in the USA alone, and thousands of varieties, blends and flavors to choose from.  Many of these brands are new, and unlike the old school brands you see at your local pharmacy, you probably have never seen them before.  But, have no fear, we are here to help with our 3 factors to consider when choosing a pipe tobacco.

1.  Price
This one is probably obvious, but the full details are not.  There are pipe tobaccos that range in price for a 16oz can or bag from $12 to $100s.  That is a huge range, and you have to consider what you are buying the tobacco for.  Are you looking for an every day smoker?  I suggest you stay closer to the bottom range, but not the lowest, unless you like the taste of dirt and cardboard.  Looking for a tobacco for the occasional pleasure smoke?  Then try one of the more prestigious brands.  I constantly have 3 tobaccos around at all times.  One is my every day smoke (American Spirit), one is my occasional indulgence smoke (Captain Black Gold) and one is my favorite flavored tobacco (Criss Cross Black Cherry)

2. How are you going to smoke it?

If you are smoking pipe tobacco in a pipe, then you typically want a fuller, richer smoke.  However, if you are planning on rolling the tobacco up as a cigarette, you definitely want to buy a mild or extra mild tobacco, unless you enjoy not being able to taste anything for days and like having a burning throat.  For the roll your own folks, I suggest something very smooth like OHM Extra Mild Pipe Tobacco.

3.  Something new, or something proven?

Every time I order pipe tobacco I consider whether I want to be adventurous and buy a new tobacco, knowing I may find a new love or end up with a bag of dirt, or if I want to buy something I am sure I will enjoy.  As long as you go in with the right expectation, you can make a choice that will make sense for you.
