Behind The Stick:

While the Joya De Nicaragua story is not one that has been told often, they are actually the first cigar to ever be produced in the Nicaragua, starting in 1964. Shortly after opening the doors, the factory and the Joya name itself began to gain traction and build in popularity. By the 1970's many politicians and 'famous' people of the time enjoyed these smokes so often, it helps to build the popularity of the brand. While many would this is the start of amazing things to come - political and social issues in Nicaragua caused production to completely halt until 2002 when the Joya De Nicaragua name was revived and the Antano again began production - this time carrying a tribute to the start of Nicaragua's cigar industry and rich history.



Construction:

I am a big fan of short, fat cigars and the Joya De Nicaragua Gran Consul is one of my favorites. Given the size of these you would expect a little fluctuation in density but these cigars are just right from the head to the foot. The extremely dark brown wrapper carries a few oils to it but not as much as I was originally expecting. Now on the other hand, the way this cigar felt made me realize just how oily it was. Cap is placed directly on target, wrapper is flawless, head clipped easily and the burn was thin and razor sharp the whole way.



Flavor:

Joya De Nicaragua has a flavor profile all unto their own - a spicy, peppery combination that makes each puff a little more unique. Wood and leather dominate the foreground, the wood seeming to be battling the other flavors for the spot light making this a more complex cigar from Joya De Nicaragua. Around the halfway point the spice has all but left the show, the wood flavors turning darker while the leather now dominates the cigar - a hint of sweet spice noticeable on the retrohale while still being overshadowed by the core of leather.


Overall:

The larger ring gauge helps to give a bit more flavor from the filler tobacco rather than the wrapper aiding in the majority of the flavors. The debate will never end - but if you are a person who prefers a higher filler to wrapper ratio but you do not want to get bored with a linear smoke than look at the Joya De Nicaragua Gran Consul. While it is not the most complex cigar on the market I will admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of flavors. With these coming in at just over 5 dollars a stick these are a great budget smoke that I know most of the full body smokers will go nuts for. These are not a cigar I would let pass you by, order your box today!
