Adding to the famous and well respected Liga Maestra line by Oliva, the Masters Blend Limited Edition 3 brings a cigar that comes from one of the greatest names in business that continually produces excellent cigars while still remaining true to the craft. The original Masters Blend was released as one of the best cigars the company had ever produced and was shortly followed by the 2nd in the line, a rare and less spoken of gem. Continuing with this series of great cigar after great cigar, the 3rd cigar in the series was created utilizing Nicaraguan Ligero long fillers cloaked by an elegant Nicaraguan broad leaf wrapper. Enough rambling - onto the review!
Construction:
Leave it up to Oliva to produce the feeling of excellence and years of skill and put it into a cigar. Evenly packed from head the foot, the colorful band stands out against the chocolate brown wrapper - easily recognizable in the humidor. As I said earlier, these cigars just have this feeling about them - I cannot quite pin it down but everything about them is "just right" from the touch, weight, color, ease of lighting and even the draw. One of those rare cigars for certain.
Flavor:
If you are looking for a flavor bomb, then get ready with this smoke - a dash of cedar, a touch of sweet tobacco followed by a kick of pepper and spice all while giving way to a finish of coffee and cookie. While this combination may sound random, the combination truly is something to write home about. The cedar flavor is apparent at the start and remains all the way to the end, a solid and enjoyable backbone. Slightly into the first third of the cigar, varying degrees of spice and sweetness transition in a constant back and forth while slowly giving way to a semi-bitter coffee that made the finish linger. The end of the cigar gave way to a more espresso overtone, the black pepper spice still and sweetness fading just a touch all while avoiding the dreaded tar buildup.
Overall:
While not the most dynamic or complex of cigars, the flavor profile took me by surprise and has brought me back to it time and time again but from a name like Oliva, should you expect anything less? While this may be the 3rd in a line that started with "The Best Oliva has to offer" I would put this 3rd release toe to toe with the original release in a battle for the title. I do not often say this and in this review I am driving it home - there is something about the way this cigar looks and feels that just screams quality and the flavor profile is complex enough to get your attention if distracted by a sports game or a good conversation, but it is not so subtly complex that you have to devote your full attention to picking out the minor changes.
